This is an excellent piece. Pope Pius XII was a phenomenal pope, and unfairly maligned for decades. He offered refreshing wisdom and rose to the occasion when Europe descended into chaos.

I recently wrote a column on his role during WWII and was reminded of his legacy when I read your words: "Instead of trying to fight a civilisational war all by yourself therefore, focus on the individual skirmishes within it that you are equipped to win."

Thank you my friend! I think at times such as these, the man who cares is tempted above all to burn himself out by taking on, or thinking he has to take on, too much at once.

The Allocutions of Pius are indeed a goldmine of sage advice, and one you have clearly tapped! If you could direct me to the column you wrote it would be a pleasure to read it!

You are most welcome Douglas. The Allocutions of Pius XII are a true goldmine of wisdom that has aged magnificently 🙏

The odious regime?! That was the one just toppled and to which the pope and nobility had acquiesced. Shameful.

Regardless of the specific context which served as the immediate trigger for the allocution, the beauty of it is that the wisdom within is not context-specific. Indeed it is arguably more applicable to our own than that of 1947, especially for Christians.
